The CW’s hit series Arrow is taking off. The show, starring Stephen Amell, is gearing up for its mid-season finale with something big. Glee star Grant Gustin joins the cast as Barry Allen, the alter ego of The Flash, in the new episode. The network has reportedly decided to give The Flash its own pilot, after Allen stole the show and possibly Ollie's girl. Will Felicity be leaving the show to join the cast of The Flash?
Grant Gustin makes his debut as The Flash in the next episode of Arrow. The two-part mid-season finale begins December 4. The character was originally supposed to appear in three episodes, with the last one serving as a backdoor pilot. However, the CW decided to move on with a standalone pilot based on footage from the upcoming two-parter.
Arrow executive producer Andrew Kreisberg spoke with E! News about casting a younger actor to play The Flash:
"It wasn't entirely the plan. I think what we really wanted and what we really were firm about was we weren't looking for another Stephen. There isn't another Stephen...Stephen doesn't need a bolt of lightning to be a superhero, he just is. We didn't want to copy that because we feel like we already have that. It was very important for us to find somebody who did need a bolt of lightning to become a superhero. But at the same time, could actually stand up to Stephen. He's 25 and out of college and working, but people don't necessarily take him seriously. That's something that he has a chip on his shoulder about."
It has also been reported that Barry will be hooking up with Oliver’s sidekick, Felicity. Kreisberg also spoke with Entertainment Weekly about the impact The Flash will have on Oliver's budding relationship:
“I think that as many people are shipping Olicity, halfway through episode 8, there are going to be just as many people shipping Bericity. They’re amazing together…we always knew Grant [Gustin] was destined to be Barry, but once we saw him and Emily [Bett Rickards] together, it was even more clear because they’re just so good together.”
So what does that mean for Oliver and Felicity? Is it possible that Felicity might be leaving Starling City to join the cast of The Flash? Kreisberg added a little preview of Ollie and Felicity’s future:
“I think they’re taking baby steps toward feeling each other out about the possibility of maybe one day that maybe something maybe could possibly maybe be something more than friends and co-vigilantes. They’re as star-crossed, in a way, as Oliver and Laurel. But star-crossed is a good thing for a superhero. It means we need a lot more episodes to get to that.”
