The next generation of video game consoles are being released, just in time for the holiday season. Sony just released the new PS4 and it debuted with killer sales. Jimmy Fallon previewed the new system on his show last week, showing off some of its incredible features. Meanwhile, Sony’s competitor, Microsoft, is about to launch its entertainment console, Xbox One
Sony released it’s incredible new system, the PS4, last week to record sales. Even before it’s release, the system secured one million pre-sales. Last week, Late Night host Jimmy Fallon previewed the system on his show, showing off some of the system's incredible features.
The console may be flying off the shelves, however, you might not have to fight off crowds at your local Wal-Mart or spend and arm and a leg on Ebay to get your hands on a PS4 this season. Andrew House, CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment, recently spoke with Game Informer about the availability of the PS4:
"[This is] the first platform launch that I've ever been involved with where we've had such a good production ramp up and a good sense of supply. I think that we will be in good supply in the countries that we've launched in...We are ensuring that we have the broadest reach to ensure that people are satisfied, especially when they've been loyal to brand for so long. On the other hand, we’re not engendering frustration by having a shortage of supply. I think through the holiday season that we’ll be in good supply."
However, not all the reviews are glowing. Fortune’s JP Mangalindan's review is one example:
"Think of the PlayStation 4 as a device with great potential, just one that developers haven't tapped into much yet – at least, based on my limited time with it. There isn't any one feature or game I've played that screams ‘next generation.’ Games I've played with run buttery-smooth and sport some great eye candy, but haven't exactly 'wowed' me, and new features like the controller touchpad have yet to be used in an innovative way."
Lackluster reviews like this one create an opening for Microsofts Xbox One to swoop in and steal some sales. Some gamers who are still torn between which horse to back in the next gen game race will get one more option this week. Xbox one hits the shelves this Friday, Nov 22.
