'Iron Man 4:' Robert Downey Jr Replacement Casting Rumors, Terrence Howard Reveals Why He Lost War Machine

Avengers 2 is still two years away and fans are already asking for an Iron Man 4. Casting rumors are flying about who should replace Robert Downey Jr, if he decides to retire from the franchise. Meanwhile, Terrence Howard is revealing just why he lost his part as War Machine.

Marvel’s president of production, Kevin Feige, recently spoke with Daily Mail about the future of the Iron Man franchise, with or without Downey:

“The good news is, I don’t have to think about it for a few years. But I do think Tony Stark is like James Bond or Batman, and can continue with different filmmakers and different actors one day.”

One of the names that is being tossed around to replace RDJ is Mark Wahlberg, although, he was the one who tossed it. Wahlberg revealed his desire to dawn the armor during a recent interview promoting his new film 2 Guns:

“I would like to take over the Iron Man franchise for Robert Downey. [but] it’s one of those things where I kind of like playing real people, [so] I’ve never been asked."

Wahlberg previously had a chance to star in a superhero film, although, he’s glad that he wasn’t cast:

“Once I was kind of being talked about for the Robin role in Batman [Forever]. Somebody dodged a bullet!...I ain't wearing no tights man.”

One member of the Iron Man cast has already been replaced. Terrence Howard originated the role of James “War Machine” Rhodes, however, Don Cheadle took over the role for the rest of the series. Howard was recently on Bravo's Watch What Happens Live, where he opened up about why he left the Iron Man franchise:

“It turns out that the person that I helped become Iron Man, when it was time to re-up for the second one, took the money that was supposed to go to me and pushed me out."

Howard went on to give specific details:

"We did a three-picture deal. That means you did the deal ahead of time--a certain amount for the first one, a certain amount for the second, a certain amount for the third. They came to me with the second and said 'look, we will pay you one-eighth of what we contractually had for you, because we think the second one will be successful with or without you.' And I called my friend, that I helped get the first job, and he didn't call me back for three months.”

Before he could finish, he had one last remark about RDJ:

“Oh, I love him. God's going to bless him."
