Halsey may have a blossoming career and an enviable friendship with pop superstar Justin Bieber, but life hasn't always been fun for the singer and songwriter. In an interview with Billboard, she revealed that she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder at age 17, and admitted she tried to kill herself.
The 21-year-old, born Ashley Nicolette Frangipane, said she hated her high school because she was bullied for “her tattoos and half-shaved head.”
“I had tried to kill myself. I was an adolescent; I didn’t know what I was doing," Halsey said. "Because I was 17, I was still in a children’s ward, which was terrifying. I was in there with 9-year-olds who had tried to kill themselves.”
The "New Americana" singer said there was “no TV, no music, no nothing” at the hospital, but when she was discharged, she had a light bulb moment in the car realizing her passion in music.
“The day I got out of the hospital I was in the car and I was listening to Imagine Dragons. It was a f**king moment for me. I don’t think I realized how important music was to me before that,” she said. “Three years later, I was opening their U.S. arena tour.”
The "Hold Me Down" artist also discussed her performance with Bieber on the Today show last November. “It was a f**king train wreck,” she said. “You don’t know fear until it’s 7 a.m. and freezing cold on live television and you’re not sure if Justin Bieber is going to kiss you or not.”
