Orange Is the New Black is one of the hottest new shows of 2013. The Netflix original series' second season release date is quickly approaching, following Julianne Hough’s blackface scandal. Now it is being reported that Scientologist Laura Prepon will be leaving the show after only four episodes.
Orange is the New Black is getting a lot of attention these days, largely thanks to DWTS pro Julianne Hough’s controversial blackface Halloween costume. Hough used the offensive makeup style to dress as her favorite character, Crazy Eyes. Afterwards, the starlet quickly apologized, tweeting:
"I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New Black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize."
However, many critics find it hard to believe that Hough wasn’t aware that blackface was offensive. Us Weekly has even reported that actress Isla Fisher tried to warn her friend about the costume. An unnamed source told the magazine that Fisher told Hough to, "go to the bathroom and wipe her face off."
Meanwhile, the show’s co-star Laura Prepon announced that she was leaving the show in the second season. It was originally reported that Prepon was only going to be in one episode, however, Prepon’s involvement will be streched to four episodes.
The show’s transgender star, Laverne Cox, recently spoke with Bustle about the direction of the new season:
“Yesterday, there was a scene playing, and I was like, ‘Oh my god!’ It was just like, okay, we’re going there, we’re just fully going there. It’s so good. The new characters are just gonna blow your mind. Some situations, you’re just gonna…wow. I’m thinking of some plot-lines and I just wish I could talk about it!…We see some sides to Sophia we didn’t get to see in the first season, and I’m having a lot of fun.”
Orange Is the New Black Season 2 will stream on Netflix in 2014.
