There has been a major update in the upcoming 50 Shades of Grey movie. The release date has officially been pushed back. While many are blaming the setback on Charlie Hunnam quitting the cast and abandoning the role of Christian Grey, the Fifty Shades team was quick to defend the Sons of Anarchy star.
Donna Langley, a chairman of Universal Pictures, recently granted an interview with Entertainment Weekly. During the Q&A session, she confirmed that the film’s release date would be delayed by six months:
"We've been looking really closely at the August date and becoming more and more convinced that the right thing to do for the movie was to push it. So even if Charlie had stayed, we still would have been making the date change.”
Donna was clearly referencing Charlie Hunnam’s last-minute decision to abandon the role of Christian Grey. Last month, the studio announced that:
“The filmmakers of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey.”
Though the studio blamed the mishap on a scheduling conflict, many have trouble swallowing that explanation. Considering that both the studio and Charlie were well aware of the shooting schedule before he accepted the role, it seems like an improbable excuse.
Huffington Post claimed that Charlie left over heated discussions involving a lackluster script. Hunnam, who is scriptwriter, himself, was allegedly asking for a rewrite, as a source told the publication:
“That led to intensified conflict between the studio and Hunnam, who shortly thereafter threatened to drop the role of Christian Grey. The actor's team reportedly advised him to keep the gig so as not to damage relations with the studio, but his mind was apparently made up.”
Whatever the reason, Universal had to find a replacement, fast. It was The Hollywood Reporter that first alerted readers to a potential setback, writing:
“The production, which was scheduled to begin shooting in early November, will now begin filming on Dec. 2, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The delay raises the question of whether or not the film can be ready in less than eight months to meet its current release date of Aug. 1, 2014. If not, the film would likely be jettisoned out of the summer frame.”
Don’t worry freaks, you’re still going to be able to get your kink on. You just have to wait until Valentines Day, 2015.
