Steve Martin & Edie Brickell’s New Musical ‘Bright Star’ Begins Broadway Previews

Steve Martin and Edie Brickell’s new musical Bright Star has officially hit Broadway. The new show by the Grammy award winners began previews this past Thursday, Feb 25 ahead of the show’s March 24 opening.

Bright Star was written by Steve Martin (book, story, music) and Edie Brickell (story, lyrics). The show is directed by Walter Bobbie.

Steve Martin discusses the inspiration behind the new musical on the official Bright Star website:

“Edie and I wanted to create something that would resonate with all kinds of people. A genuine story with strong melodies and real emotion. I’ve been playing the banjo and writing music my entire life, and bringing Brightstar to Broadway is tremendously exciting.”

Edie Brickell also chimed in about the birth and Bright Star, adding:

“The first movie I ever saw in a theater was The Sound of Music. It was so powerful. I loved that every song was something you could sing with simple, beautiful melodies. When we started to write our musical, I thought, I would love to write songs that bring such joy to people. So we brought our little acorn of an idea to Walter, who had the vision to make a treehouse!”

The cast of Bright Star includes:

Carmen Cusack, Paul Alexander Nolan, Michael Mulheren, A.J.Shively, Hannah Elless, Stephen Bogardus, Dee Hoty, Stephen Lee Anderson, Emily Padgett, Jeff Blumenkrantz, Maddie Shea Baldwin, Allison Briner, Max Chernin, Patrick Cummings, Sandra Denise, richard Gatta, Lizzie Klemperer, Michael X Martin, William Michals, Tony Roach, Sarah Jane Shanks, and William Youmans.

Bright Star is in previews now and will officially open on March 24.

Bright Star is playing at the Cort Theatre, located 138 W 48th St, New York, NY.
