Major news came from the cast of the 50 Shades of Grey movie this week. Amid rumors that the release date and trailer have been delayed, a photo seems to show Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson meeting. Charlie Hunnam, who abandoned the role of Christian Grey, has not broken his silence about leaving the film.
EL James, the author of Fifty Shades of Grey, really knows how to generate buzz through Twitter. If she’s not causing a public outcry by her casting decisions, then she’s giving hints as to how the film’s progress is coming.
Friday was no different, as James posted a photo of what appears to be Jamie Dornan’s feet opposite those of Dakota Johnson. Jamie will be playing Christian Grey, billionaire S&M maverick, and Dakota will be filling the role of Anastasia Steele, his love interest.
Of course, Jamie wasn’t always scheduled to be the lead. Charlie Hunnam was originally cast in the role of Christian Grey, however, the actor abruptly walked away from the once-coveted role.
His exit came after there was a tremendous fan backlash when James announced that he would be playing the lead role in the film. Of course, the studio’s story as to why Charlie left is much different. They told their followers on Twitter:
“The filmmakers of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey.”
Many, however, aren’t buying that excuse. After all, producers of the film were well aware of Charlie’s shooting schedule before hiring him in the first place. Many believe it was due to the negative reactions he drew from fans of the novel, however, HuffPo claims that there was a problem with the script.
According to the site, Charlie demanded several rewrites of the script:
“That led to intensified conflict between the studio and Hunnam, who shortly thereafter threatened to drop the role of Christian Grey. The actor's team reportedly advised him to keep the gig so as not to damage relations with the studio, but his mind was apparently made up. In an effort to appease the star, Universal hired Patrick Marber ("Closer," "Notes on a Scandal") to do some rewrites on the script--but the next day Hunnam announced his departure.”
Regardless of why Charlie quit, it left the studio scrambling to fill his shoes. Filming was scheduled to begin in just a matter of weeks. Despite their speedy casting decision, production was still pushed back, according to The Hollywood Reporter:
“The production, which was scheduled to begin shooting in early November, will now begin filming on Dec. 2, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The delay raises the question of whether or not the film can be ready in less than eight months to meet its current release date of Aug. 1, 2014. If not, the film would likely be jettisoned out of the summer frame.”
