The Chicago Symphony Orchestra's (CSO) innovative MusicNOW 2015-16 series continues with a concert led by MusicNOW Principal Conductor Cliff Colnot on Monday, March 7, at 7 p.m. at the Harris Theater for Music and Dance in Millennium Park. The new program titled (sub)text, which focuses on nontraditional uses of text and voice, is curated by CSO Mead Composers-in-Residence Samuel Adams and Elizabeth Ogonek.
One of Ogonek's own compositions, Falling Up, is also featured, as well as composer Agata Zubel's Labyrinth, Kate Soper's Only the Words Themselves Mean What They Say, and Eric Wubbels' sextet Katachi.
The March 7, program opens with Kate Soper's Only the Words Themselves Mean What They Say, which features Soper as vocalist alongside flutist Erin Lesser, with whom she premiered the piece in February 2011.
Then it's on to Ogonek's 2015 work for a small ensemble, Falling Up, followed by Polish contemporary composer Agata Zubel's Labyrinth is scored for chamber wind ensemble and voice, and performed by the composer herself.
Eric Wubbels' energetic sextet Katachi closes the program, featuring vocalist Kate Soper and laptop artist/improviser Sam Pluta.
Concluding each MusicNOW concert, the audience is invited to enjoy a post-concert reception with the artists including complimentary refreshments including pizza provided by Lou Malnati's Pizzeria and beer provided by Revolution Brewing Company.
