Thor 2: The Dark World is out now and the founder of the Free Loki campaign is weighing in on the film's shocking end scene. The group is petitioning Marvel to make a solo spin-off Loki film, so they have a vested interest in the movie's conclusion. Spoiler Warning Below!
If you have not seen the film, please put down the internet and head on over to your local movie theater to catch the next showing. Now that you have all been warned and presumably have all seen the film, let's start with the ending (which is always a good place to begin).
At the end of the film, it is revealed that Loki is alive and well, posing as Odin. Loki, as Odin, had the perfect opportunity to banish and disarm Thor. Thor, having committed treason, even offered his weapon as penance for his actions. Instead, the shape-shifter gives Thor his blessing, with a very sincere sounding farewell speech. The ending begs the question, 'why didn't Loki do away with his rival while he had the chance.'
Is Loki, in some ways, redeemed? We asked Denise Heard-Bashur, founder of the Free Loki movement, if she thought Loki was sincerely proud of his brother. She responded:
"Did I think Loki was actually proud of Thor? That is such a tough call. Oh that duplicitous Loki. My opinion has always been that Loki feels he's the only one allowed to mess with Thor. That being said, we see him protecting Thor, protecting the woman Thor loves and, in the end, alluding to his having risked his life for Thor. Though, note the ambiguous line: 'I didn't do it for him.'
"We just assume he means he did it for Thor, but this is Loki we're talking about. Nothing he says is ever cut and dry. Thus, it's difficult to say whether he was truly proud or just grateful that Thor, once again, played right into his hands. Of course many would love to believe that Loki experienced some sort of redemption within himself, and he may have, but he is still and will forever be Loki, God of Mischief. His desire and determination to sit on the throne of Asgard knows no loyalties."
What do you think? Was Loki redeemed at the end?
