The mid-credits scene for Thor 2: The Dark World confused a lot of moviegoers, comic readers not included. As odd is it was, the coda actually teases a major plot development for a future film. Warning Spoilers Below!
The film's (first) coda features Sif and Volstagg taking the Aether to a rather strange individual for safe keeping. The mysterious, eccentric is Taneleer Tivan, also known as The Collector. In the comics, The Collector is one of the Elders of the Universe, a group of super-powerful ancient beings. Tivan is a central character in the upcoming movie, Guardians of the Galaxy, played by Benicio Del Toro.
Sif and Volstagg take the Aether to The Collector because it is one of the six Infinity Stones. The Tesseract, from Captain America and The Avengers, is also one of the six stones. When all six of the stones are joined together, they grant their owner with almost infinite power.
The strange scene doesn’t exactly fit in with Thor 2, although it does directly tie into the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy.
GOTG director James Gunn spoke with Crave Online, about Thor's mid-credits scene.
"I got a script [the morning of shooting], and we did it in two hours at the end of a second unit day. It fits into our overall story of what's going on. I had talked to Kevin [Feige] about it and we decided the basics of what was going on. It was really late that we decided to put it on the movie. I mean really late. It wasn't that long ago we shot it."
Del Toro's performance definitely stands out. In a separate interview with MTV News, Gunn spoke about the eccentric character:
“He’s out there man. He’s the best. He’s so out there. We just kept watching him on set and being like ‘Oh my God.’ He’s probably the character that was the most different from what I imagined. Although I did sort of say he’s like an outer-space Liberace. That’s what it says in the script, which he’s kind of doing. He really came in prepared and doing something utterly unique and he’s mesmerizing the whole time he’s in the movie.”
