Along with the Roots, Jimmy Fallon premiered a new song from 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne in a special late night performance. Along with the noted performers, however, was also Classicalite favorite Black Violin, a hip-hop duo from Florida.
The performance came as the debut of Chainz and Wayne's forthcoming collaborative effort Collegrove. In a performance of "Rolls Royce Weather Everyday" many outlets have reported positive reviews, while the song harbors on your standard self-aggrandizing rap lyric.
But, with the most famous house band ever, Jimmy Fallon's Roots backed the dueling rappers and also presented Black Violin in their ranks. The two violinists from the south colored the track with unique violin details that didn't just add an orchestral element, but also a '90s retro-feel too.
Black Violin, however, has a brand of their own and have released albums featuring the two classically trained violinists. Their latest LP, Stereotype, took a similar topical approach as Kendrick Lamar's smash To Pimp a Butterfly.
The hip-hop duo describes themselves:
"Black Violin is made up of two classically trained musicians; one violinist and one violist from Miami, FL. We fuse all sorts of different genres of music together bridging the gap between two completely different worlds -- HipHop and classical. We hope to convey a clear message to the world in a way that everyone can understand whether you're black, white, purple, green, young, old, etc."
A mash-up of classical and hip-hop, this isn't the first time the spheres of each respective genre have come together. At the 2016 Grammys, orchestral work and hip-hop frequently blended on and off the stage.
But don't get bogged down in the political message. Instead, watch Black Violin back 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne along with the Roots in a performance on the Tonight Show below.
