Thor 2: The Dark World opens domestically tonight and the box office predictions are in. Earlier predictions for the films preview suggest that the sequel could top $75 million.
Thor: The Dark World opened internationally last week and has already brought in an impressive $133.4 million. After Thursday's early American previews and the film's Friday opening in China, the movie will be on track to bring in a predicted $300 million by the weekend. The first film brought in a total $449.3 million throughout it's entire run.
The success of 2012's Avengers is credited for the sequel's drastic audience growth. Fans of the MCU ( Marvel Cinematic Universe) will get an early preview of the upcoming film, Captain America: The Winter Soldier when they see Thor: The Dark World in 3D. Disney Studios executive vice president of theatrical distribution, Dave Hollis, talked about the five-minute preview in a press statement, saying:
"After Marvel’s The Avengers, the Marvel films are more interwoven than ever, and this pairing is the perfect complement to both of the new movies. Thor: The Dark World is going to be an exceptional theater going experience, and this sneak peek will really rev fans up for the return of not only the Mighty Avenger but the First Avenger as well."
The film will also tie directly in with an upcoming episode of Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. The official synopses for the episode airing on November 19, reads :
"The Well"--In the aftermath of the events chronicled in the feature film Marvel's Thor: The Dark World, Coulson and the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. pick up the pieces--one of which threatens to destroy a member of the team, on Tuesday, November 19 (8:00-9:01 p.m., ET) on the ABC Television Network."
