Thor 2: The Dark World opens in the U.S. tomorrow and in many theaters, tonight. A small underground group, devoted to the idea of getting Marvel to make a solo Loki spin-off film, starring Tom Hiddleston, has been growing in numbers. The round robin, internet petition has grown substantially over the last few months. Now with the film's release date approaching, Denise Heard-Bashur, the founder of the Free Loki campaign, has released an exclusive statement to Clasicalite. The press release not only thanks the group's supporters but also aims to draw attention to charity opportunities.
"Tomorrow I will see Thor: The Dark World for the first time. So much of my time and attention has been focused on this film as a result of steadily campaigning for a Loki solo film since Tom Hiddleston’s epic appearance at the San Diego Comic Con this summer. What was months of anticipation will be over in less than two hours of the new Marvel logo flashing across the screen. While the film doesn’t necessarily mean more to me than it does to any devoted fan of the franchise, as the founder of the Free Loki, I certainly have a lot riding on it that probably isn't shared by a majority of the fan-base.
Free Loki will be one campaign on Thursday and quite another on Friday. While I’m aware of and have been planning on certain changes based on guided information I’ve been given over the past couple of weeks, when all is said and done I have no idea how this film is going to end, and more importantly, where we’re going to leave off with Loki. That being said, who can really predict the future of the Free Loki campaign?
I have a strong hope and will for it to go on even bigger and better afterwards. We’re not just campaigning for a film. In addition to my desire to use our influence to benefit non-profit organizations such as Operation Smile, Free Loki has begun to stand for something.
I’ve had the unbelievable privilege of watching my amazing supporters feel empowered that their voices are being heard each time Tom Hiddleston or Kevin Feige addresses the issue of the campaign. When Chris Hemsworth joked that it was really him who started this petition, or when Hiddleston has patiently and tolerantly answered the deluge of questions about his thoughts on a solo film, it said to fans that their voices had reached exactly as far as we intended them to.
While Free Loki has many supporters, there are also many who are strongly against it, which is perfectly understandable and reasonable. Despite that, the continuing success and popularity of this campaign seems to be achieving something that few fan-driven movements do. This has as much to do with our dedication as Marvel’s willingness to listen. They are considering the fans’ perspective. Are they going to give in to our every desire? Of course not. They may not give in to any of them, but they are listening and weighing nonetheless. They are paying respect to their fans’ voices and giving them due consideration. There aren’t many companies that will do that, particularly in the entertainment arena. It is that sort of respect and responsibility that fosters the deep loyalty Marvel is able to enjoy from its audiences.
While Marvel may never see fit to develop a solo Loki film, I speak for myself when I say I am very honored to have been, at the very least, heard. It’s been a fantastic, unforgettable ride being able to be part of a footnote in the MCU/Thor franchise history. I’m sure many of Free Loki’s supporters feel exactly the same way.
Free Loki will go on, under a different name, but we won’t throw in the towel until there is absolutely zero hope. We’ll maintain our fund-raising efforts for Operation Smile and UNICEF as well as provide a strong community for fans.
And we will definitely continue being the forlorn hope and reiterate that both Hiddleston and Loki deserve their own film in the MCU menagerie. We intend to carry on, advocating the God of Mischief and his remarkable portrayer every step of the way.
Simply put: he has an army.
