New York Philharmonic's 'Insights at the Atrium' Continues Feb. 10 with Mahler's Sixth

In continuing its Insights series, on Wednesday, Feb. 10 at 7:30 p.m. the New York Philharmonic presents a new installation at the David Rubenstein Atrium entitled "Stepping Inside Mahler's Sixth." Using recordings of Mahler's Sixth, which were led by music directors Mitropoulos, Bernstein, Maazel and Alan Gilbert; Professor S. Alex Ruthmann demonstrates new technology that helps aid in gaining a new perspective in the music.

For this iteration of the Insights program, Prof. Ruthmann and his team will introduce a new prototype called "oiid," which helps take audience members inside the score and establish what separates each piece, part and note from its subsequent theme.

Ruthmann, too, will be join by music historian Erik Ryding, Philharmonic Audio Director Lawrence Rock and Philharmonic Archivist/Historian Barbara Haws. The evening will be an introduction to the new music format prototype.

According to the Philharmonic website:

"Using Philharmonic recordings of Mahler's Sixth Symphony led by Mitropoulos, Bernstein, Maazel, and Alan Gilbert and marked conducting scores from the New York Philharmonic Leon Levy Digital Archives, Professor Alex Ruthmann and his team from the New York University Music Experience Design Lab working with a new technology and music format called oiid have developed a prototype that allows listeners to explore the score and understand what distinguishes each performance. Interactive stations will be available to 'test drive' the prototype at this media-rich event featuring speakers on the historic relationship of Mahler's Sixth Symphony with the Philharmonic, and the new prototype that has taken material from the Leon Levy Digital Archives in a new direction."
