Dave Mirra tragically died at the age of 41 on Thursday, February 4. The BMX bike legend and former host of MTV’s The Challenge was found inside his truck with an apparently self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Police are investigating the apparent suicide.
Local news reports that the 41-year-old was visiting some friends in Greenville, North Carolina, the same location where his body was found.
Before his alleged suicide, Mirra posted a touching tribute to his wife on his Instagram account, captioning the snap, "My rock! Thank god,"
In the photo, the X Games star can be seen smiling with his wife as they held two glasses of champagne where they appeared to be celebrating something special at that time.
Many have mourned the loss of Mirra, including the Greenville mayor, Allen Thomas.
“We mourn the loss today of a great friend and wonderful human being who touched the lives of so many around the world with his gift," he said. The Mayor then went on to say that while Mirra was simple and down to earth speak with kids about BMX, he was also comfortable with his status as a star.
"A young life with so much to offer was taken too soon,” Thomas added.
After learning the death of his good friend, fellow BMX superstar and co-host in MTV's The Challenge, TJ Lavin told TMZ, "I just wish he would have called me. I would have jumped on a plane in a second. There's always another way. If anyone needs help, just please get it. I feel sick about this."
At this time it is unknown why Mirra took his own life and police are still investigating to determine all circumstances surrounding this death.
