For his next installation of #Ham4Ham, Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda invited Ms. Audra McDonald to join him in singing a tune from the show entitled "Say No to This." While Mr. Miranda may have channeled his forefathers, Ms. McDonald went her own way and brought the spirit of Billie Holiday to the stage.
The genius new musical has implemented a weekly giveaway for patrons unable to procure tickets on other platforms. Dubbed the #Ham4Ham, the giveaway also featured fellow Hamilton cast members to greet patrons outside the Richard Rodgers Theatre before the night's performance. The aim is to host a lottery in which a lucky audience member will receive a massive deduction on tickets and purchase them for $10.
While there are usually live performances, winter has since forced the lottery to take to the internet and social media platforms to help engage its insatiable demographic. As the volume of foot traffic and attendees continues to grow outside the venue, Richard Rodgers has since been required to revamp their accommodations for the guests.
Miranda wrote of the video that features Ms. McDonald,
"6-Time Tony Award Winner and living legend Audra McDonald joins us to perform Say No To This--AS Billie Holiday. That's Alex Lacamoire on keys and Richard Hammond on bass. Don't miss Audra and the MOST INSANELY-STACKED-WITH-TALENT-CAST-EVER in Shuffle Along, coming to Broadway in March.https://shufflealongbroadway.com. Good luck with the lotto!"
A unique addition to the contest, Ms. Audra may not have her singing time period aligned to the play but the Lady Day addition comes as part of her forthcoming engagement with HBO. She will sing the songs of Billie Holiday in an exclusive event hosted by the network on March 12.
The performance is titled Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill, the same name as Ms. McDonald's role as Ms. Holiday in a staged production beginning in the fall.
