In a move that few would have predicted, Green Day front man Billie Joe Armstrong and Nora Jones have teamed up for a country album. To be more specific, the pop-punk singer and jazz songstress are doing a cover of the Everly Brothers' album, Sounds Our Daddy Taught Us, called Foreverly. The original 1958 record was, itself, a cover record.
The unlikely duo of Billie Joe Armstrong and Nora Jones manged to somehow record under the radar. The clandestine cover album of a cover album comes as a pleasant surprise to fans of both. Armstrong and Jones recently sat down with Stereogum to talk about the record, where Armstrong spoke about his brain child:
"We sang together with Stevie Wonder and a whole bunch of people, that's how Norah and I first met. I got into the Everly Brothers’ record a couple years ago and I thought it was just beautiful. I thought it would be cool to remake the record because it was sort of an obscure thing and more people should know about it. But I really wanted to do it with a woman singing because I thought it would take on a different meaning."
Armstrong' s wife first suggested that he contact Jones for the record. Jones added that she was not convinced at first, saying:
"I had just gotten off tour and I was kinda tired. I didn't know how I felt about jumping into making a whole record. We agreed to go into the studio for a few days just to try it out."
She later added that it was Armstrong's wide-eyed enthusiasm that ultimately drew her in:
"Billie Joe, you’re such an enthusiastic person, you totally sold me in three minutes. It definitely took a minute to get super, super comfortable. But then after hearing what the first song ['Roving Gambler'] sounded like I thought, 'Oh, it's gonna be great, it's gonna be fine.'"
Foreverly comes out on November 25.
