'DWTS' Cast Defends Julianne Hough after 'Orange is the New Black' Blackface Halloween Costume Controversy

Former Dancing with the Stars pro Julianne Hough caused quite the controversy with her Halloween costume. The young starlet wore blackface to portray Orange is the New Black character Crazy Eyes. Now some of her DWTS cast mates are coming to her defense.

Hough was quick to apologize, following the offense. The dancer/actress tweeted her apology, saying:

"I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New Black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize."

Hough's brother and fellow DWTS pro Derek Hough came to his sister's defense, telling E! News:

"She's my little baby sister and she's the sweetest thing ever. She is just beyond beside herself. She's so apologetic. She's so so sorry.Obviously, it wasn't her brightest moment in her life, but hopefully we can move on."

Former contestant and comedian Bill Engvall defended Hough on CNN, saying:

"Fortunately or unfortunately, in this day and age with 24-hour coverage and social media and all that, you got to be careful with what you do. And (Hough) would no more make any kind of racist statements than anybody on the earth. And so I would say it was probably just an innocent mistake...Trust me, I've had things taken the way I didn't want things."

Dance pro Val Chmerkovskiy also chimed in on the issue, adding.

"I know Julianne personally and none of the critique that she is getting at all relates to her as a person, period.Whether it was a smart decision is a different conversation. But the intention, and going deep into the conversation of judging her character, of what she may or may not think behind the scenes -- that is absurd. I know her as a person and she is kind and graceful...and she has the right mentality. I just think it was a stupid mistake."
