Portland Timbers Debut New Home and Away Kit for 2016 Season

The Portland Timbers unveiled their home kit for the 2016 season, and for those who tuned in to the Timbers MLS Cup victory over the Columbus Crew, it will not be a new design. The kit will feature a gold and white chevron pattern across the front with a new script logo for their sponsor, Alaska Airlines. The team will no longer use their former crest, which featured the team's name, and instead will stick to their more modernized crest, which is more appealing on the eyes.

Also noticeable on the new, updated away "Rose City" kit, which was teased by club owner Merritt Paulson, is the gold star above the red crest. The MLS, much like national teams with World Cup victories, add stars to team crests for MLS Cup victories. Teams like DC United, with four MLS Cups, have a collection of stars, but it is nice to see a new champion get to add a star to their kit.

Overall, the home design is nice. It stands out due to its design across the front but isn't a monstrosity like some MLS teams. Of course, the distinct dark green is their specialty, and continues to look nice. I'm interested to see how their "Rose City" kit will come out, as it goes against everything Timber-related. It is nice to see them break out a new color scheme, as nearly every European football side does.

The defending MLS champions will take the field with a nice new kit, and to very high expectations in 2016. They should be considered a favorite to not only compete for another title, but also lead in jersey sales.
