The reviews are in for Toby Keith's new album, Drinks After Work, and he isn't happy about them. Not because they are bad. They are actually great, and that's why the "Red Solo Cup" singer is worried.
Toby Keith is one of country music's most recognizable names. In his 20-years in the business, he has learned a thing or two about the industry. One of those things has been that "controversy sells."
The "Angry American" singer is no stranger to a good old fashioned feud or tracks laced with taboo topics. However, its his new record's glowing reviews that has 52-year-old worried. Country Weekly is reporting on Keith's reservations about the reviews, quoting the singer:
"Everybody got worried. It was just crazy. We better go back and try again. You know, if I'm not rubbing somebody the wrong way, it's usually not a good sign."
Keith joked about the reasons for the reviews, saying:
"Maybe they're just giving me a break 'cause I'm getting older. I don't know. Maybe they just got tired of me giving them the finger."
Keith also added that he hasn't read a review in over a decade:
"I've always thought, you know, I don't need anybody to tell me this is a great album. It doesn't do me a bit of good for somebody to say, 'This is great. It also is not, 90 percent of the time, it's not productive to hear agenda-driven criticism."
The singer/songwriter co-writes a lot of his own music. However, Keith didn't have a hand in writing the album's title track. The singer recently spoke with CMT News about the challenge this new song presented.
"This one is just like second nature now, But the first time I heard it, it was a really cool song, I just didn't know if it sounded like me or if I could even pull it off. And if I go in with something I didn't write, I usually know we're going to have big success with it, but this one, I didn't. We just wanted to cut it and see what happens."
