One of the most pivotal characters in the upcoming Marvel film Captain America: Civil War is Spider-Man. Marvel recently acquired the rights of the web-slinger back from Sony so that he could make an appearance in their Cinematic Universe. The big question is, "Why haven't we seen him yet?"
The Spider-Man acquisition was a big moment for Marvel and Sony. The two companies have not had a friendly alliance in the past, rather you could say that they were enemies. With the success of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the apparrent plunge that Sony has made with its most recent Spider-Man film, there is no wonder Sony made this deal. They have the most to gain from it. They are allowing Marvel to save Spider-Man from another lackluster film, and shoddy reviews. Let's face it, Amazing Spiderman 2 was entertaining (to an extent) and even used the most famous Spider-Man comic of all time as its source material! If this couldn't save him, nothing would. I think that is why Sony has decided to call for help.
This brings Marvel to the rescue. While Sony is allowed to make more Spider-Man movies, Marvel is allowed to use the character in their own universe. This is a great deal all around. Sony will get the additional help that Marvel can provide, while Marvel can finally appease fans.
Recently, during a Q&A with Collider, the Russo brothers talked about The Winter Soldier, joke a bit about when we will get to see Marvel's Spider-Man. They also talk about the reasons why we haven't seen what he looks like yet, saying "Part of the reasons of what was so secretive was that the deals were always lagging slightly behind how we were using the character. We were always in danger of upsetting the deal-there were still sensitive issues going on between the two studios that they needed to agree on. When we were casting Tom Holland, when we were screen testing him for the movie there was a whole very involved kind of process that was under the radar and secretive, because of the fact that it was still a sensitive business issue.... The reason why I preface that is we're still kind of in "deal zone". The reason why we still won't talk about [the costume] is that Marvel and Sony still have to work out what uses they have for the character, on a promotional level, on a commercial level. There's still complications as far as that goes that involves business deals."
All of this sounds like business is usual for Hollywood, helps fans understand that this is not just Marvel holding out on everyone. Hopefully they can hash out all of the details in the deal soon. I cannot wait to see what the Web-Slinger looks like. You can check out the full Q&A session in the video below:
