Saturday January 30th, 8 PM, Miller Theatre, the Columbia University School of Arts is the place to be. Vibraphonist and composer Stefon Harris takes the stage with his new band Sonic Creed. I don't feel the need to talk this cat Stefon Harris up. You should be in the know already. He is where it is happening. My man has armed himself with a new band. The Music Gods annointed them with the name Sonic Creed and them mothers and Mr. Harris plan to lay a whole bunch of funk, postbop, R & B tinged jazz on you. That is if you are at the Miller Theatre at Colubia University School of Arts at 8 in the PM, dig?
Let me tell you all a little something about Stefon Harris. Bring you less heps up to speed. Mr. Harris has been tabbed by the Los Angeles Times as being one of the most important young artists in Jazz. Mr. Harris has some serious cred to his name already, let me tell you. According to the press release the people at the Miller put out to let you know what's going down, Harris is ".a three-time Grammy nominee, six-time Best Mallet player by the Jazz Journalist Association, and recipient of Lincoln Center's Martin E. Segal Award, Harris earned a B.M. in Classical Music and a M.M. in Jazz Performance from the Manhattan School of Music." Not only that, he also "serves on the Executive Board of Directors for Chamber Music America, and was the first musician elected to the WBGO-FM Board of Directors." He ain't Superman, mind you, but Superman never played the vibes like my man Stefon does.
Featured in the Sonic Creed is a beautiful and talented young lady by the name of Elena Ayodele Pinderhughes on the flute and vocals. Ms. Pinderhughes pulled herself a recording contract with the same label that discovered and signed Rihanna. Her debut album will be appearing this spring so I suggest you check her out before her popularity goes off the charts. I mean, they are practically giving these tickets away for the amount of talent they will be presenting on that stage. Single tickets range from $20 all the way up to $35 dollars.
