Mormon Julianne Hough's Blackface Controversy: 'DWTS' Derek Hough Defends His Sister

Julianne Hough recently came under fire for dressing up in blackface for Halloween. The Dancing with the Stars pro and her friends were all dressed as the cast of the Netflix original series, Orange is the New Black. Hough was dressed as her favorite character, Crazy Eyes, portrayed by actress Uzo Aduba. Hough has since apologized for the offense but has been called out for being both a Mormon and a moron. Now her brother Derek Hough has come to her defense.

Hough tweeted an apology after her not-so-well-thought out Halloween costume offended many, saying:

"I am a huge fan of the show Orange is the New Black, actress Uzo Aduba, and the character she has created. It certainly was never my intention to be disrespectful or demeaning to anyone in any way. I realize my costume hurt and offended people and I truly apologize."

Derek Hough, who was at the very same party as his little sister, recently spoke with E! News about the controversy, saying:

"She's my little baby sister and she's the sweetest thing ever. She is just beyond beside herself. She's so apologetic. She's so so sorry.Obviously, it wasn't her brightest moment in her life, but hopefully we can move on."

However, others aren't so understanding of the starlet's mistakes.

Talk show host Wendy Williams addressed the issue with her audience, saying:

"You have to figure this: This was, like, an intentional move. This was not something that happened all of a sudden and she was like, ‘Oh, is this racist?' You put thought into your Halloween costume...You don't just show up in blackface. Which means she's not just less than smart off the cuff--she's less than smart even when she thinks about it."

She also added that her sheltered Mormon upbringing was not an excuse.

"She grew up Mormon. She only thought that there was one kind of alcohol until I guess she arrived to Hollyweird and discovered you can drink something different every minute of the day. Does she get a pass if she grew up out there? Because I'm thinking there's books and there's internet and TV…the world is your oyster."

White actress Martha Plimpton had a few comments for Hough and the white race, tweeting:

"It's not hard. White people: Do not wear blackface. Life will still be okay if you don't ever, ever, ever wear blackface. OKAY? GREAT."

She later elaborated on the issue:

"I don't respond to every stupid thing every idiot does. Just the stuff I think matters. Blackface matters. Can we use this moment additionally to also recognize that elevating morons to celebrity status does not help the world in any way? Ever? Not every pretty person with two legs needs to be famous. People who DO things, okay. It just makes nonsense like this inevitable."

Although, she eased up a bit after reading Hough's apology, later tweeting:

"I do feel bad for calling @juliannehough a moron. That was mean. Ugh. I'm sorry. Glad she acknowledged her mistake. I should, too."
