Surprise! Square-Enix Declares New 'Hitman' Game to be Delivered in Episodic Format

After the surprise cancellation of all pre-orders for Square-Enix' upcoming 'Hitman' game, the developers finally explained the reasoning behind their actions. The new 'Hitman' game is going to be delivered in an episodic format, as opposed to the traditional full-release.

Hitman is still planned for a March 11, 2016 release date, but instead of getting the full game that you were expecting, instead, you get just the first of six world-wide locations. This time, you get a prologue and Paris. Over the next few months, the additional spots will be added, with Italy in April and Morocco in May. According to Polygon, Square-Enix and Io Interactive will "deliver regular monthly content updates, including three additional locations; Thailand, the US and Japan until the season concludes in Japan later in 2016." These latter episodes don't have release dates yet, other than sometime in 2016.

You can get the first part of the game for $15, and then purchase each additional location for $10, or you can just splurge on all of them at the same time for $60. I suppose it's a good way to try out the game if you don't know if you'll like it.

The Io Interactive team claims "Part of that decision [the new format] is for that little bit of extra time to ensure every location we release is at the quality level fitting for a Hitman game. But the main driving reason is that this will allow us to create a living game that will expand and evolve over time and establish a foundation for the future - this is the first game in a storyline which will continue and expand with future Hitman games."
