Canadian Opera Company General Director Renews Contract Through 2021

Canadian Opera Company general director Alexander Neef will stay in the position through the 2020-21 season.

The Toronto-based company announced Monday that its German-born director has renewed his contract as general director for another nine years.

"The relentless improvement in the artistry we are witnessing on the stage of the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts is the best evidence of Alexander Neef's unique ability to fit the right artists to the works that can best show their talents," said Philip C. Deck, president of the COC board of directors.

In a statement, Neef said, "At the time of my appointment in 2008, my promise was to make the COC one of the best companies in the world."

"The last four years have been about increasing the company's international reach and reputation, and that will continue to be a priority, but they've also been about taking the necessary time to form relationships and deep roots within our community," Neef added.

Under Neef's leadership since October 2008, the company returned to the Brooklyn Academy of Music for the first time since 1993. And productions during his service include the world premiere of "The Nightingale and Other Short Fables" and the Canadian debuts of "Maria Stuarda", "Love from Afar," and "A Florentine Tragedy".

Neef's new contract is effective until the end of September 2021.
