Obama nominates Local Dance Company Founder to a Key Administration Post

US President Barack Obama has nominated Ranee Ramaswamy, founder and co-artistic director of the Ragamala Dance Company, as a member of the National Council on the Arts.

The Indian-American female nominee is a master performer, teacher and choreographer of Bharatanatyam since 1978. She has been a disciple of Alarmel Valli, Indian classical dancer and choreographer since 1984.

"These dedicated and accomplished individuals will be valued additions to my Administration as we tackle the important challenges facing America," said Obama in a statement as he announced the nomination of seven more key administration posts.
"I look forward to working with them in the months and years ahead," the President added.
Ramaswamy, 60, started perfoming and teaching Bharatanatyam dance in the Twin Cities in 1978. She received 2011 McKnight Distinguished Artist Award, a Bush fellowship and awards from the NEA, and National Dance Project and Minnesota State Arts Board.
Her work has been commissioned by the Walker Art Center, American Composers Forum, and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, and has been supported by the National Dance Project and the Joyce Foundation.

She earned a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from the University of Madras in Chennai, India.
