Thor 2: The Dark World is almost here and the Internet is buzzing about Loki. The Free Loki movement, committed to convincing Marvel to produce a solo film featuring the Avengers' villain, has a vested interest in the film's outcome. However, the underground organization is not only focused on Tom Hiddleston's comic book character. The group is also honoring the talented actor's varied body of work, including his upcoming vampire film, Only Lovers Left Alive. The group's founder, Denise Heard-Bashur, has released an exclusive statement about both the actor and the character:
"One of the biggest misconceptions about my co-founder, John Chavez, and me is that we wish to keep Tom Hiddleston in the role of Loki for the rest of his career. Likewise it’s thought by some we also have no interest in the development of other as-yet-unexplored characters by Marvel. Nothing could be further from the truth.
While John and I are fully and actively supportive of the Free Loki campaign it should be understood that we started this with very basic, idealistic intentions. We love the character because he’s a multi-faceted, walking contradiction who’s just plain fascinating. We also can’t imagine any other actor wearing those golden horns. Hiddleston so perfectly embodied the God of Mischief that his face, voice and gestures have newly-defined that character. Even comic creatives, Al Ewing and Lee Garbett, have found inspiration in Hiddleston’s iteration of the god for their new series Loki: Agent of Asgard. That being said, it seems almost elementary that fans would want this character explored further. We’re not the first or only ones to have this idea; we’re just the ones who ran with it.
But is Loki the only character in Marvel treasure chest deserving of a solo film? Not at all. That’s never been our platform. Recently it was confirmed by Kevin Feige that a Black Panther movie is in Marvel’s future as well as one for Doctor Strange. As a fan I’d love to see Black Widow, or even a team up of Black Widow and Hawkeye, get a stab at headlining a feature film. I cheered when I found out Agent Coulson would lead a team every week on ABC. I’ve had many talk to me about wanting the infamous Thanos to finally get his day. That would be amazing really. (Why not pit him against someone he probably has a score to settle with? Loki, perhaps?)
On that note Loki is hardly the only role I ever want to see Tom Hiddleston play. In fact, it’s not even my favorite of his roles, amazing and iconic as he is in it. To date, his best turn, in my opinion, is as Henry V in The Hollow Crown series. I’m positive that his upcoming portrayal of Adam in Only Lovers Left Alive is going to turn the Hiddlestoners’ world upside down in a very good and big way. I actually have a wish of seeing him pitted against the likes of Ralph Fiennes or Gary Oldman in a psycho-suspense thriller ala David Fincher.
The guy has some serious acting chops, and it would be short-sighted to think he could ever stay confined to a comic book villain. We’re very fortunate that there seems to be a crop of exceedingly gifted and well-trained actors in the 30-40-years-old age bracket coming out of the UK to ensure the tradition of impeccable acting reinforced by British thespians like Fiennes , Oldman, Branagh and Rickman continue—cause I have to say, I was actually worried about that ten years ago. Tom Hiddleston is absolutely on the board of directors of this group.
Hopefully Hollywood will seize the opportunity to bring Hiddleston to a huge range of roles in the near future now that he’s seemingly off the hook with Marvel for awhile. In his short career he has swiftly and impressively proven he has the savvy to take on whatever they throw at him with impressive ingenuity.
But there’s no reason that repertoire can’t include another go at the God of Mischief somewhere down the line. It doesn’t look as if most of us have had nearly enough of him just yet.
