Recently J.J. Abrams appeared on The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast where he defended The Force Awakens:

"I can understand that someone might say, 'Oh, it's a complete rip-off!.’What was important for me was introducing brand new characters using relationships that were embracing the history that we know to tell a story that is new -- to go backwards to go forwards."

We are are certainly glad that is what was important to Abrams. However, taking into consideration that Star Wars fans waited 30 plus years for this movie, you taking the cheap way out only served to ruin the franchise for many. It should go without saying that you don’t have retell a story in order to embrace its history.
