The latest incarnation of Bram Stoker's classic novel, Dracula, returns to life tonight, just in time for Halloween. NBC's new limited series stars the Tudors' Jonathan Rhys Meyers as the title character. The joint venture from both American and British Television will air following supernatural thriller Grimm.
Dracula, the brand new limited series will air on both NBC and their London-based, Sky Living. The show premieres first tonight on NBC, and will air on Halloween night on Sky Living.
The most recent incarnation of the classic story stars Jonathan Rhys Meyers of the hit BBC/Showtime series, Tudors. The series showrunner is Daniel Knauf, creator of the HBO series Carnivàle.
In the new show, Meyers version of Dracula, also known as Vlad Tepes, takes on the guise of American Alexander Grayson. In a recent interview with the Los Angeles Times, Rhys Meyers spoke about the characters duel identity:
"Vlad is who he is. Grayson is the mask, a type of Howard Hughes figure, as the American who represents the new world posing a threat to Victorian society, and Dracula is the monster in him that is like an open nerve."
NBC's official synopses for the show reads:
"Golden Globe winner Jonathan Rhys Meyers (The Tudors) stars in this provocative new drama as one of the world's most iconic characters.
It's the late 19th century, and the mysterious Dracula has arrived in London, posing as an American entrepreneur who wants to bring modern science to Victorian society. He's especially interested in the new technology of electricity, which promises to brighten the night--useful for someone who avoids the sun. But he has another reason for his travels: he hopes to take revenge on those who cursed him with immortality centuries earlier. Everything seems to be going according to plan...until he becomes infatuated with a woman who appears to be a reincarnation of his dead wife. "
Dracula airs tonight on NBC at 10 p.m. following Grimm.
