Marvel's shared cinematic universe is growing fast. Thor: The Dark World is almost here, setting the stage for next year's space ensemble, Guardians of the Galaxy. Now the fate of the film rests in the claws of one tiny raccoon--make that the gun-toting Rocket Raccoon. Now Kevin Feige and Parks and Recreation star Chris Pratt are speaking out about Bradley Cooper's portrayal of the character.
Some Marvel fans were a little concerned that one of the next films in the series will be based on a group of largely unknown heroes. They were even more concerned with the fact that one of these heroes was a raccoon. However, after fans got an early look at the trailer during the San Diego Comic Con, public perception is changing. The films star, Chris Pratt, recently told Screen Crush that fans should not underestimate the cuddly critter:
"You think it’s a cartoon character, but it’s not, it’s a very real creature. [Rocket Raccoon has been] tortured his whole life and no one else likes him, so he’s lonely and he’s angry and it’s like, [there are] all these elements [to the character]. You sort of forget about that, you wouldn’t think about, [and] hopefully will come to life. I think it will and that’s why they hired a really good actor to do the role. I could not be more excited that Bradley Cooper is voicing Rocket Raccoon. It’s a great character. It’s probably the best character in the movie, just because it’s not what you would expect."
Marvel Studio's president of production, Kevin Feige, went a step further, telling Total Film that Rocket will be the key to the film's success or failure:
“We have said early on that the entire movie hinges on Rocket [Raccoon].Hinges on our ability to make the audience accept this gun-wielding raccoon in space. And it started with 'A,' a great character in the comics, 'B,' James Gunn doing an amazing job writing this character, and the animation that the vendors are working on now. And Bradley Cooper bringing this character to life. The key to Rocket is that he doesn’t necessarily know or care that he’s a raccoon, and if you point that out to him, he’s not particularly pleased about it.”
