NBC's cult college comedy, Community, officially has an air date. The returning series will be coming back on January 2, 2014. Meanwhile, Castle star Nathan Fillion will join the cast in a guest spot later in the season.
Community is finally coming back, but it won't be the same. Chevy Chase left the show last year during the fourth season. The comedy legend caused a stir when he made a racial slur on the set, while protesting his character's increasingly offensive dialog. Chase told the Hollywood Reporter last year about his disdain for the series:
“The hours are hideous, and it’s still a sitcom on television, which is probably the lowest form of television. That’s my feeling about it. I think the reason I have stuck around is because I love these kids, the cast--they are very good. It’s not like I am working with the great innovators of all time.”
Chase isn't the only departure. Donald Glover is also cutting class, as the actor is only in five of the 13 episodes this season. Donald's taking a break to catch up on other after-school projects, including his own NBC series.
However, Castle and Firefly charmer Nathan Fillion will appear this season. The silver-tongued ladies man will be giving Joel McHale a run for his mone as a politically savvy janitor. Fillion is a longtime fan of the show and often visits the set. The actor tweeted from the set last year,“It’s my #community dream come true!”
Show creator Dan Harmon is returning as showrunner for Season 5 after being let go for Season 4.
