The cast of the upcoming 50 Shades of Grey movie recently underwent a major change. Charlie Hunnam, who was set to play the lead role of Christian Grey, recently quit the project. While the studio indicated there was a scheduling conflict, new reports suggest that he walked away from a low salary and a bad script. In this latest update, we’ll take a look at the rumors and let you know what celebrity wants to see James Franco replace the stud.
Once EL James announced that Charlie Hunnam and Dakota Johnson would be playing the lead roles in the film adaptation of her popular novel, all hell broke loose. Fans immediately took to Twitter and Facebook to express their outrage with the casting decision.
Despite the widespread criticism, the movie studio has denied that fan backlash had anything to do with Charlie Hunnam’s abrupt departure. They released an official statement to the press, blaming his withdrawal on scheduling conflicts:
“The filmmakers of FIFTY SHADES OF GREY and Charlie Hunnam have agreed to find another male lead given Hunnam’s immersive TV schedule which is not allowing him time to adequately prepare for the role of Christian Grey.”
But now, new reports allege that Hunnam was unsatisfied with the script. Charlie, himself a writer, was reportedly demanding additional edits. According to HuffPo, the studio refused and Charlie decided to walk away:
“That led to intensified conflict between the studio and Hunnam, who shortly thereafter threatened to drop the role of Christian Grey. The actor's team reportedly advised him to keep the gig so as not to damage relations with the studio, but his mind was apparently made up.
“In an effort to appease the star, Universal hired Patrick Marber ("Closer," "Notes on a Scandal") to do some rewrites on the script -- but the next day Hunnam announced his departure. (The official reason cited was Hunnam's production schedule on "Sons of Anarchy," but "50 Shades" is slated to begin work after production on "Anarchy" ends.)”
Of course, there are other rumors regarding his exit. Multiple reports indicate that Charlie would receive just $125,000 for the role.
Regardless of the reason, the studio now finds itself struggling to replace the actor, just weeks before shooting. One possible suggestion--James Franco. At least that’s who Britney Spears thinks will be great for the part.
We want to hear from you. Why do you think Charlie quit? Would James Franco be a good fit?
