James Cameron Targets 2017 Release Date for 'Avatar 2,' Talks Link with Cirque du Soleil

Avatar fans have been waiting years for the return of the promised films, and James Cameron now targets the end of 2017 for the release date of Avatar 2. Cameron also reveals how Cirque du Soleil may have signficant influence on the upcoming film.

After the release of the original Avatar film, Cirque du Soleil put together a production called Toruk, set about 3,000 years before the humans arrived on Pandora, and deals with the Na'vi dealing with one of the great flying predators of the world. And James Cameron wants Cirque involved. "I think there are some nice ideas that were developed by the artists on Toruk."

He further elaborated with "I tell my artists, 'Hey, make sure we're not ignoring what they've done.' Why wouldn't it be a creative feedback loop? They fed on our designs. There are a few things I liked in the costume design. So it's nice for me to see how other people interpret the Na'vi world and the world of Pandora."

Personally, I loved the set design, costumes, and world of Avatar. It was one of the best movies I'd been to when I saw it one snowy evening. Ever since, none of my friends will watch it with me as I keep pointing out all the flaws that Cameron forced on the humans to make them lose.

But aside from my personal feelings for humanity, Avatar really is a good film, and I can't wait to see more of it. Better yet, Cameron is aiming for three consecutive yearly release dates. According to IGN, "Avatar 2 is reportedly hitting theaters at Christmas 2017, with the sequels opening in 2018 and 2019."

So we might be getting both a new Star Wars and a new Avatar movie in the same year. Sounds good to me!
