It finally happened. For the first time in 13 years, South Park missed one of its famous six day deadlines. The long running animated series attempts to remain topical by producing each new episode within six days of its scheduled air date. However, thanks to a blackout, Wednesday's episodes didn't make it to air. Instead, the South Park team live tweeted repeats of fan favorite episodes, ''Scott Tenorman Must Die''and last week's ''World War Zimmerman.''
South Park has taken a revolutionary approach to animation over the years. The show's once-hand cut characters are now completely computer generated. The high tech rendering of the show's simplistic art style means that episodes can be produced in record time. For years, the show has been produced from start to finish in just six days. The tight deadline has put lots of stress on the show's staff over the years, but they have somehow never missed an episode. That is until last night.
Thanks to an uncontrollable blackout, Episode 1704 (Season 17, Episode 4), "Goth Kids 3: Dawn of the Posers," failed to make its air date. The South Park team tweeted the news to fans, saying:
"Last night, #SouthPark lost power. All computers were down & we were unable to finish the new episode."
The network released a statement on it's website officaly announcing the missed deadline:
“From animation to rendering to editing and sound, all of their computers were down for hours and they were unable to finish episode 1704, "Goth Kids 3: Dawn of the Posers" in time for air tonight.”
One of the show's creators, Trey Parker, also added:
“It sucks to miss an air date but after all these years of tempting fate by delivering the show last minute, I guess it was bound to happen.”
Stil..the show must go on...even in the form of reruns. The team live tweeted reruns of two of the most popular episodes:
"TONIGHT- we're doing back-to-back LIVE TWEETS of 'World War Zimmerman' & 'Scott Tenorman Must Die' starting at 9:30p EST! #SouthPark"
During the rerun of "World War Zimmerman," the team tweeted:
"This was to be our 1st episode back. Token was in a 9 month coma & Cartman was scared he'd freak about Zimmerman's verdict."
