Disney/Pixar's Toy Story of Terror airs tonight on ABC and features Tom Hanks and Tim Allen. The Toy Story series has become a beloved childhood classic, but is the new short TV special too scary for young children?
Disney/Pixar's Toy Story of Terror picks up where the last film left off. The toys and their new kid Bonnie head out on a road trip that soon goes awry, when the gang has to spend the night in a creapy roadside motel. However, Bonnie's suitcase has limited space, and a few of our favorite friends wont be coming along for the ride--most notably Ham. The show's producer, Galyn Susman, and director Angus MacLane recently spoke with Hypable about the overnight adventure. Susman talked about the descion to leave series staple Ham back at home:
“Who takes their piggy bank traveling?”
Don't worry, other series regulars including Buzz, Woody and Jessie are still around, as noted by MacLane. He told the publication, "We knew from the beginning this short had to include them.” Other characters making an appearance include: Mr. Potato Head, Rex the dinosaur, Mr. Pricklepants and Trixy. The episode also features new toys such as, Combat Carl, a G.I. Joe type action figure, A Pez cat and Old Timer, a clock toy, amongst others.
Some parents are concerned that the spooky special will be too scary for their little ones. The duo addressed the issue, with Maclane admitting, “When we first brought it to John [Lasseter], he said it was too scary.”
Susman added that they took measures to tone it down a bit, saying:
“But we’re glad it was that, and that he didn't say ‘it isn't scary enough.’ Better to end up with something that’s too scary, because it’s easier to take away from something than have to figure out what to add.”
In a separate interview with the Wall Street Journal, Maclane said,"If the title is too scary for you or makes your kids jump, the movie is too scary for you."
Susman also spoke with TV.com about just how spooky the short is compared to films:
''If you think about all of our Toy Story movies, there is an element of threat—there are frightening moments in those movies. Toy Story 3 is WAY scarier than Toy Story of Terror. Sid's room is REALLY scary. So from the perspective of Toy Story, I don't think this is any scarier. The thing that's different is that, unlike the feature films when they are first released, some parents will choose to plop their very young children down in front of a television and walk out of the room. That's not something you have to worry about at the first release of a Toy Story 3. And so we were really firm on wanting the word 'terror' in the title. Because from our perspective, we were messaging to parents, This is scary, if your child is liable to scared, PLEASE don't leave them alone in the room with the movie. So it's not Toy Story Halloween Special, it's Toy Story of Terror.''
Toy Story of Terror airs Tonight, October 16 at 8 p.m on ABC.
