Pianist Yekwon Sunwoo, 23, won 2012 William Kapell International Piano Competition and Festival Saturday at Clarice Smith Center at the University of Maryland.
The Korean pianist played Sergey Rachmaninoff 's Third Concerto with the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra on the final stage. In addition to the $25,000 prize, Sunwoo won the audience prize, selected by ballots cast after the concerto round.
The second award was given to another South Korean pianist Jin Uk Kim, 28, with $15,000 prize. Kim, a graduate student at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, performed Johannes Brahms' Concerto No. 2.
American pianist Steven Lin, who took the $10,000 third prize, played Rachmaninoff's "Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini".
Conductor David Lockington, current music director of the Grand Rapids Symphony, led the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra with the three young soloists throughout the final round.
The three finalists will be given the opportunities to perform with Baltimore Symphony Orchestra.
