'Walking Dead' Season 4: Rick Grimes Talks New Theme And Carl's Fate [SPOILERS]

The fourth season premiere of the Walking Dead is just one day away and Sheriff Rick Grimes is laying down the law about what to expect this year. Andrew Lincoln recently spoke about the theme of the show and what's in store for Carl. SPOILER WARNING

In a recent interview with VH1 Rick Grimes himself, actor Andrew Lincoln opened up about the theme of this year's deadly new season:

“I think the theme can be expressed in a question: Can we ever come back? Can we ever come back from the things that we’ve seen, the traumas that we’ve been through? Can we ever be the people we once were? Can we continue? Can we rebuild civilization? I think that’s a beautiful thing that’s interwoven through all the characters and story lines.”

Lincoln also spoke about his on screen son, Carl, played by 14-year-old Chandler Riggs. When Carl isn't busy getting shot, he's likely off shooting other children or inadvertently putting the group in danger. Lincoln was asked if basically anyone was going to be around to keep Carl on a leash this season:

“That is directly addressed. [This season is about] the story of a boy becoming a man and a father accepting that. I think this is his biggest season. He’s an astonishing young actor. He’s really pushed this season. Just wait! just wait!”

In a separate interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lincoln talked about the new struggles involved in taking care of the now much larger group:

"There’s around about 50 new characters, and that puts obviously an enormous pressure on the group with the practical necessities of food and water. It is a third-world environment that we’re existing in now...We were a band of maybe 10 characters at the end of last season. So there’s the character relationships, and the group dynamic has changed — radically. There are always going to be tensions within the group … and you find us in a place where people are trying to wrestle with those problems as well as, obviously, the pressure of the walkers and survival.”

The Walking Dead airs tomorrow night, Sunday October, 13, on AMC at 9 p.m.
