Renowned director Steven Spielberg has reportedly made a promise regarding Harrison Ford, Indiana Jones, and the future of the series. He seemed to indicate that Harrison Ford would forever be the one and only Indiana Jones.
In a recent interview with Screen International, Spielberg said "I don't think anyone could replace Harrison as Indy, I don't think that's ever going to happen." He further elaborated in the interview, stating, "It's certainly not my intention to ever have another actor step into his shoes in the way there have been many actors that have played Spider-Man or Batman. There is only going to be one actor playing Indiana Jones and that's Harrison Ford."
Personally, I think that's pretty awesome. Of course, even with that being said, in another 15 or 20 years when Spielberg and Ford have drunk from the wrong cup, who's to say that some studio won't rab the rights to the Indiana Jones franchise and pull a remake? Hopefully it won't happen. It would be nice if iconic roles could be left alone, sort of like a museum piece, but that could just be my inner curator speaking. And as one writer stated, "the last time we tried to replace Harrison, we bet on Shia Lebeouf. Soooo, yeah."
The reason behind the inquiry into Indiana Jones is twofold. One, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, the latest less-than-stellar production of the series. It appeared as if Labeouf was slated to become the next adventurous archaeologist, but hopefully we'll never see him again in the series.
The second reason is the huge turnout for casting of the new Han Solo for the spin-off Star Wars movie. With over 2,500 people auditioning for the part, it's certainly not unreasonable to wonder if a new Indy might be in the works.
Thankfully, though, it seems that Indiana Jones is safe, at least for now.
