Ariel Castro, the monster responsible for holding three woman against their will for ten years, while he repeatedly raped them, was sentenced to life plus 1000 years in prison recently. However, The Cleveland Kidnapper, added one last insult to his victims, when he reportedly hung himself shortly after entering prison. It seemed that the man who had no problem keeping others caged up, couldn't stand to be kept behind bars himself. Now a new report has come out that suggests Castro may have not intended to end his own life but may have died as a result of auto-erotic asphyxiation.
The official Department of Rehabilitation and Correction Operation Support Center After-Action Review Report, cites signs of auto-erotic asphyxiation:
"The Team reviewed several sources of information in an attempt to determine the motivation for
the self-inflicted death because Castro left no suicide note and had previously shown no suicidal
ideations in multiple levels of assessment. He was found in his cell with a Bible open to John
Chapters 2 and 3. Additionally, he had pictures of his family out and arranged in a poster-board
fashion. He was hanging from a hinge in the window of his cell by a sheet wrapped around his
neck. His pants and underwear were pulled down to his ankles. The relevance of this finding is
unclear. These facts, however, were relayed to the Ohio State Highway Patrol for consideration
of the possibility of auto-erotic asphyxiation. No other immediate observations about the scene
led to conclusions about the motivation for the self-inflicted death."
The Bible chapters that letter referenced contain the acts of Jesus turning water into and wine and clearing the temple, both in chapter two. Chapter three contains the well known verse John 3:16: "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
This and the pictures of his family may indicate that he was intending to end his life. However, other evidence does tend to point to auto-erotic asphyxiation. Castro, convicted of hundreds of counts of rape, claimed to have little control over his sexual urges. Castro blamed the kidnapings on his addiction to sex, telling the court: "These people are trying to paint me as a monster. I'm not a monster. I'm sick."
