The free agent market is clearing the decks at a fast and furious rate at the moment. First, Jordan Zimmermann goes to the Detroit Tigers and signs a 5 year $110 million and now the prize catch of the offseason, David Price, is set to sign swith the Boston Red Sox for a reported 7 year $217 million dollar deal. Both pitchers were reportedly coveted by the Chicago Cubs this offseason and both instances the northsiders were never a factor in the bidding.
For Price, in the end, it came down to two teams, St. Louis and Boston. According to Bob Nightengale of the USA Today, " the Chicago Cubs met with Price but never made a formal offer, according to the person directly involved in the negotiations." Apparently, Price thought he was signed, sealed and bound for St. Louis but Boston had their sights set ln Price and threw in enough where he could not say no. This wil be the third AL East team that Price will pitch for. He was drafted by the Tampa Bay Rays, traded to Detroit, and then went on to Toronto.
As for the Chicago Cubs, there are still several pitchers out there to be had (Greinke, Cueto, Gallardo). However, the Cubs already have two aces on their team and what they need more than a collection of overpriced free agents is depth. Because, let's me honest, if you're not comfortable throwing Jon Lester in a must win game, why did you go out and get him then?
Jesse Rogers, ESPN online go - "You can't blame the Chicago Cubs for avoiding that bidding war as they already have two pitchers at the top of their rotation, but like the other top starters on the free-agent market, the Cubs kicked the tires on Price and then realized there were no discounts to be had."
