Aamir Khan Clarifies Statements About Intolerance

A big brouhaha has risen in the wake of Aamir Khan's comments about intolerance in India. Aamir has found support and scorn for verbalizing his thoughts. During an interview with the Indian Express, Aamir voiced his concern about the growing since of fear and insecurity due to the recent violence in Paris by Islamic extremists. Khan is Muslim.

Instead of using this moment as a learning, poiticians have went on the attack against Aamir, labeling him an anti-national and even went as to infer that the 50 year old actor was trying to fan the flames of civil unrest. Bollywood stars such as Hrithk Roshan have voiced their support for Aamir. Roshan posted this tweet on his Twitter account, " What I learn from this - even when attacked u must find d power to respond and not react!"

For his part, Khan tried to smooth over the furor The ruling BJP party have come out to protest Aamir's words and try to escalate a war of words. Via the BBC online, "Another BJP spokesperson, Sambit Patra, said that "Aamir Khan is the face of 'Incredible India' [a TV campaign by Mr Khan to promote tourism], how can he make such a remark? I request Aamir Khan not to leave India and he won't find another nation like it".

Actor and BJP MP Manoj Tiwari said "it is unfortunate that Aamir Khan says intolerance is on the rise in India".

Of course, Aamir's comments aren't coming out of left field. Earlier in the month, Shah Ruhk Khan spoke about the growing intolerance which he termed as exctreme. As well, according to the BBC online, "A movement that began with writers returning state awards spread to scientists, historians and filmmakers. They cited the killing of rationalists MM Kalburgi and Govind Pansare, as well as the lynching of a man over suspicions he consumed beef, as examples of rising intolerance in the country"
