The doctor is insane. Dr. Who star Matt Smith will be starring in the upcoming American Psycho musical. The musical is an adaptation of Bret Easton Ellis' novel of the same name. The news comes just in time for the upcoming Dr. Who Christmas special and serves as an early present to series fans.
Nothing screams musical like murder. Matt Smith, of Dr. Who fame, will be making his musical theater debut in the role of Patrick Bateman in American Psycho. Bateman, a banker turned brutal killer, first came to life in the pages of Bret Easton Ellis' 1991 novel and then in the 2000 film adaptation, played by Christian Bale. Now it appears Bateman will be stalking the Almeida Theatre in London.
The show, staring Smith, was written for the stage by Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Spring Awakening's Duncan Sheik. The Almeida's new artistic director Rupert Goold will direct the show. Matt Smith recently spoke about working with Goold, as the BBC News reports:
"The opportunity to work with Rupert Goold, a director of great vision and flair, combined with the brilliant story and music, seemed like such a cool challenge."
Goold also shared the sentiment:
"Matt Smith is a wonderful stage performer and the perfect actor not only to lead our exceptional cast but also my first show as artistic director here at the Almeida."
The show nearly sold out within hours of Smith's casting announcement. Smith, a virtual unknown before his time on Dr. Who, has since become beloved by the series cult like fan base. The long running BBC series will begin it's 8th season of its latest incarnation in August of 2014. First, however, will be the upcoming 2013 Christmas special. That special will feature the doctor's trademark regeneration for the 11th time with the first appearance of the 12th Doctor, played by Peter Capaldi, who is replacing Smith.
American Psycho opens at the Almeida on Dec 3 and runs until January 25. You can make one last appointment with Doctor Smith in the upcoming Dr. Who Christmas Special.
