Doug Flutie, former NFL and college football great, was always the underdog. He was admired for his determination and desire to win, despite his small stature and, perhaps, lack of talent. Despite overcoming all the odds to do what he did, and even having 53 years of living in this world, he couldn't have been ready for today, as he lost both of his parents no more than an hour apart -- the saddest thing ever.
Flutie talked about his parents, Richard and Joan, shortly after losing them.
"My Dad had been ill and died of a heart attack in the hospital and my Mom, less than an hour later had a sudden heart attack and passed away," Flutie wrote on his Facebook page. "They say you can die of a broken heart and I believe it."
Who wouldn't believe that someone could die of a broken heart if this happened to them?
I mean, that's true love if I've ever seen it. If anyone thinks that is merely a coincidence, I beg to differ.
His father was ill and died of a heart attack, and for his mother to have that triggered inside her minutes after his passing is something devastating, even for a 53-year-old man and his two other siblings.
No one ever wants their parents to die, but it is inevitable for the majority of children. One day, and we don't know when, we'll all lose our parents. All we can hope for is that they lived a full and happy life, and at least in Flutie's case, his parents had been married for 56 years. That sounds like a full and happy life to me.
For the Flutie family, November 18 will always be a sad day, but also a day to remember all of the good times they've had with their parents, and all of the blessings in their life.
