ABC was very pleased with the premiere ratings of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. So much so, that the network aired the pilot on the following Thursday in place of Shark Tank. However, the reviews are in and they don't look good. That, coupled with this week's poor ratings, make many wonder how safe is the 'Avengers' spin-off.
The network had high hopes for the new Marvel universe spy series. With the success of the Avengers' film series, the show should have had a built in audience. However, after an impressive first week showing, the second episode dropped dramatically in the ratings. Losing over a third of it's audience, the downfall took out every other show on the network that night.
This could be due to fans not wanting to tune in during the live broadcast, instead opting to catch it on demand, or via Hulu Plus...or it could be the result of poor reviews. The pilot episode drew in an onslaught of curious viewers wanting to see how the Marvel Universe translated to the screen. The show, however, failed to wow, viewers and reviewers alike. The weak showing was predictable and lacked charm. Still, critics agreed that there was potential for something great.
Unfortunately for the series, this week's episode failed to gain any ground with the critics. And the ratings have started to reflect that. That being said, now that ABC has started cancelling shows, can the series survive the killing season? Is Disney prepared to lose it's television tie in to its super successful film series? And how could S.H.I.E.L.D failure effect other potential super hero shows, such as Gotham and The Flash? Tell us what you think in the comments section below.
