Watch out Jeff Winger, a new silver tongued, ladies man is coming to Greendale and his name is Nathan Fillion. The Firefly and Castle star will be joining the cast of Community in a guest spot, during the fifth season. The show is going to need all the help it can get, despite creator Dan Harmon returning to the head of the class, as actors Chevy Chase and Donald Glover are dropping out.
Nathan Fillion has amassed a cult following for his roles on Two Guys, A Girl and a Pizza Place, Firefly, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Castle, and the web series Doctor Horrible. Now the fan favorite is joining the cast of another cult series, NBC's Community.
Fillion has been a long time fan of the series. He will often visit the set, including a trip last year where he posted a picture of himself with cast members, saying:
“It’s my #community dream come true!”
Fillion now gets to relive that dream, when he guests stars as a politicaly aware janitor in the upcoming fifth season. Here's hoping Fillion pulls a Good Will Hunting and stays on at the college. The cast will need all the new students it can get. Enrollment at Greendale has been lowered since Chevy Chase dropped out last semester.
Chevy Chase left the show last year during the fourth season, when he made a racial slur onstage while protesting his character's ever increasing offensive remarks. Chase spoke with the Hollywood Reporter last year about his disdain for the show:
“The hours are hideous, and it’s still a sitcom on television, which is probably the lowest form of television. That’s my feeling about it. I think the reason I have stuck around is because I love these kids, the cast — they are very good. It’s not like I am working with the great innovators of all time.”
Also star Donald Glover is reportedly only going to be in five episodes of the 13 episodes season. Glover is cutting class to catch up on other after school projects, including his own NBC series.
Community season five currently doesn't have an air date.
