Guillermo del Toro Joins 'The Simpsons'' Emmy Killing Cast For 'Treehouse of Horrors' Halloween Special

It just wouldn't be October without The Simpsons' "Treehouse of Horrors." The show recently made news when it announced plans to kill off a member of its Emmy winning ensemble cast. Where the death won't take place until 2014, this Halloween season no one is safe...especially not with director Guillermo del Toro on board.

Del Toro, director of the Hell Boy series and this summer's smash hit Pacific Rim, is directing this year's annual Halloween special. Del Toro told Reuters about his big plans for the nearly 25-year-old tradition:

"I asked Matt Groening if I could make the sequence around horror and fantasy in general, and throw in my movies there. But this way, it's a love letter to things that I love, both in 'The Simpsons' and the genre."

Del Toro even has big plans for the shows signature coach gag:

"I kept trying to add things ... but I pared it down because I wanted very much to make it as consistent with the title sequence as possible."

Recently the show's executive producer Al Jean spoke with the Hollywood Reporter, about his plans to kill off a major character:

"[We're] working on a script where a character will pass away. We are doing this story for the same reason we do all others -- we think it has a good emotional through line...The story will be produced this year though it may air in season 26."

The character's Identity is a complete secret, save for one hint;

"The actor playing the character won an Emmy."

Anne Hathaway and Kelsey Grammer have won Emmy awards for guest roles on the show. Although, it's also likely that one the main cast may meet their demise.

Hank Azaria provides the voices for an almost uncountable number of characters on the the show, including Moe Szyslak, Apu Nahasapeemapetilon, Chief Wiggum, Comic Book Guy, Carl Carlson. Azaria has won three Emmys during his time on the show. Also, the show could also to kill off Homer Simpson himself. Dan Castellaneta won an Emmy for the role in 1993.

The Simpsons "Treehouse of Horrors" airs Sunday October 6, at 8pm on Fox.
