It has been 20 years since Jagged Little Pill was released and Alanis Morissette's "Ironic" went soaring through the charts. Now the singer is out touring the country to celebrate the album's milestone anniversary. Her most recent stunt found her on stage with James Corden spoofing the hit song with hilariously updated lyrics. Before you pollute your mind with the images from the spoof, refresh your memory by watching the original video.
"For their Late Late Show duet, Corden and Morissette revived the singer's thick braid and red ski cap look from the song's video while singing about Tinder, Facebook and Snapchat." To be perfectly honest, Corden looks like Morissette's hideous hobo doppelganger. Even so, the funny spoof is a rather catchy rendition and is actually pretty well done.
Morissette manages to slip in a bit of personal dialogue during the duet, pointing out there are "Ten thousand male late night hosts," and all she really, "wants is just one woman." The jab was very obviously directed at a perturbed Corden, who brilliantly turns the original line, "It's meeting the man of your dreams and finding out he has a beautiful wife," into an accusation that Morissette is shouting at him. Well played. Well played, indeed.
Later in the ditty, Morissette even makes fun of herself a little with the line, "It's singing 'Ironic,' but there are no ironies," something many people have said about the song since it first came out.
The Guardian was lucky enough to recently interview Morissette and, "When asked if she was tired of people saying there was nothing ironic about "Ironic," she said people must be "very at odds" with the idea of being stupid. "I mean, malapropisms; big f*cking deal. It's kind of like in traffic when you're yelling at someone for cutting you off and you're cutting someone off, too.""
This most recent spoof of "Ironic" follows a disconcerting performance from The Jagged Little Chicks in which Morissette, together with Jimmy Fallon and Meghan Trainor, dressed up as chickens on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon and clucked the entire song. You are welcome to watch the clip, but be warned. What you see, you cannot unsee and what you hear, you cannot unhear.
