On his fourth studio album, The Tallest Man on Earth tinkered with new sounds to expand his sonic repertoire beyond a solo act. Following a similar path, Kristian Matsson (a.k.a the Tallest Man) now explores ballet in his new video, "Darkness of the Dream."
The Swedish singer-songwriter is infamous for his lack of appearances. Having cited that he prefers his solitude (a la his first three albums), Matsson is reinventing himself as an artist.
Directed by Jakob Wallin and featuring cinematography from Jesper Guldbrand, the feature shows Matsson traipsing through dusty mountains and sharing a room with two other dancers.
Donning white pants sans a shirt, the choreography is tricky, traversing acrobatics and ballet all in a simple twist. A lone dog accompanies Kristian through the rocky terrain while shots of a dense wood help add to the visual's color--literally.
As Stereogum put it, "This is the point where I'm obligated to point out that if Matsson were really the tallest man on earth, they might not have been able to lift him so easily."
Dark Bird is Home was released via the Dead Oceans label and succeeds his previous album, There's No Leaving Now. In the latest LP, Matsson seems to be taking on a more optimistic approach to his music, adding symphonic elements and collaborating with Bon Iver's Mike Noyce.
Earlier this year, Matsson passed through Town Hall in New York City and the Williamsburg Hall of Music to tour the new album. The video comes as a continued promotion for the record, which is a different take on the musician's somber sound.
But don't let us do the talking for you, check out the visual element to "Darkness of the Dream" and see The Tallest Man on Earth in a way you've never seen him before.
