New Orleans Saints Sign Matt Flynn After QB McCown Goes Down With Season Ending Injury

The New Orleans Saints have signed a new backup quarterback to the team. With Luke McCown going down with a season ending injury, Matt Flynn has been brought on board to pull backup duties for Drew Brees.

According to Dan Hanzus of NFL.com, Sean Payton announced during a radio interview on Monday that the veteran QB Matt Flynn has been signed. This news of the signing has been confirmed on Matt Flynn's Twitter account as well.

The Saints signed McCown after their current backup went down with a season-ending lower back injury. He has been placed on injured reserve. McCown was given the start in one game this season for an injured Drew Brees and put up a good show. He completed 31 of 38 passes for 310 yards. He only had one three-and-out series in the game, and was a shining moment for the Saints to focus on in what (up until that game) was a dismal season without a win. There is no doubt that McCown will be missed.

Flynn, an LSU alumni and NCAA National champion, will attempt to fill that void for the rest of the 2015 NFL season. Flynn brings a ton of experience to the Saints. He got the majority of his experience holding a roster spot behind one of the best quarterbacks in the game today, Green Bay's Aaron Rodgers. Flynn also spent time with Seattle, Oakland, and Buffalo during his 12-year NFL career.

Flynn will help round out a Saints team that needs all of the help they can get this season. At 4-6, they are currently in third place in the NFC South behind the Atlanta Falcons and the undefeated Carolina Hurricanes. The Saints will face the Washington Redskins this week, and look to regroup after an upsetting 34-28 loss to the Tennessee Titans.
